Discover the Lake District’s valleys, lakes, and low fells with 30 of the finest walks in this beloved National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site. From the shores of Windermere and Coniston Water to the ancient woodlands of Borrowdale and the iconic waterfalls at Aira Force, explore both renowned beauty spots and hidden gems throughout the region. Although some hill-walkers may concentrate only on the highest peaks, this comprehensive Cicerone guidebook shows that the valleys, lakes, and lower fells offer some of the most rewarding and dramatic scenery in the Lake District.
Wander through secluded wooded glades, discover hidden tarns tucked into green folds, and marvel at glacier-carved valleys beneath towering crags. Each route is crafted to highlight the region’s natural and cultural treasures, visiting fascinating historical sites and circling the most striking lakes. Ideal for newcomers and seasoned visitors alike, these Lake District walks feature gentle strolls (such as the circuit of Buttermere) and straightforward introductions to the low fells (like High Rigg), as well as new perspectives on Lakeland favourites (such as Outerside and Barrow) and quieter routes through less-explored corners.
The walks are divided into five regional sections: South Lakes, Central Lakes, Western Valleys, North Lakes, and Eastern Lakes, covering the entire National Park. Most routes are circular, with a few linear options making use of local buses and boats. Enjoy a diverse selection of low level routes in the Lake District, from lakeside ambles and woodland wanders to riverside strolls, valley circuits, and gentle climbs leading to panoramic viewpoints.
Highlights include Borrowdale’s ancient woodlands, the historic Hardknott Roman Fort, picturesque lakeshores, spectacular waterfalls, stone circles, and breathtaking views at every turn. Visit classic destinations in the Lake District such as Great Langdale, Tarn Hows, Buttermere, and Crummock Water, as well as quieter, less-travelled spots like Seathwaite Tarn and Wythop’s Fells. Experience a variety of Lake District terrains, from broad, constructed trails to narrow footpaths across open fell, all routes graded from 7 to 17km and free of technical difficulties.
Each walk includes comprehensive details on start and finish points, distance, total ascent, grade, estimated time, terrain, map requirements, refreshment stops, and public transport options. All routes are graded from one (easiest) to five, helping you choose the perfect low level Lake District adventure for your group. Map extracts are taken from the Ordnance Survey® 1:50,000 Landranger® series and enlarged to 1:40,000 for maximum clarity—providing detailed coverage of the Lake District’s unique terrain.
GPX tracks are available for free download, making it easy to navigate the region’s iconic landscapes. A helpful route summary table ensures flexible planning for your adventures in the Lake District. Also available from Cicerone: Lake District High Level and Fell Walks.
Plan your Lake District low level and lake walks with Cicerone’s definitive guidebook and discover tranquil lakeshores, spectacular waterfalls, ancient woodlands, historic sites, and unforgettable views—proof that you don’t need to climb the highest peaks to experience the true magic of Lakeland.

All items that are in stock will show a delivery timescale of 1-3 working days. If your order consists solely of these items, then dispatch is within 1 working day of purchase with the exception of framed and customised items which may take up to 14 days.
If your order is a non-stock item, the delivery timescale on that item will show as 3-10 working days on the product details. In these instances, dispatch is usually 3-7 working days with delivery in 5-10 working days. If your item is delayed for any reason, we will update your order to provide an explanation of the delay, although it is not always possible to say how long the delay will be. The item will be kept on order for up to three months and supplied to you when it becomes available. After 3 months, we will cancel the order or the remainder of the order unless you ask us to keep it on back order for longer. Incomplete orders will be held until the remaining items come into stock, unless we anticipate a long delay. At our discretion, incomplete orders may be sent out as partial shipments if we anticipate that an item may take some time coming in to stock.
EU customers - IMPORTANT: You will be required to pay import VAT (tax) at your local rate to your postal delivery service before any goods are delivered. Since 2021 you have not been charged British VAT (at 20%) on any purchases or P&P charges, however, with effect from 1 January 2022, the rules regarding importing from outside the EU changed and import VAT is now payable on any value of goods imported into the EU. This is separate to any tariff which may or may not be chargeable on the goods due to their country of origin. Please also note that we are legally required to declare the correct value of your purchase which is used to calculate the tax and any tariff duty. Failure to pay the import charges will result in the goods being returned to the UK. Our terms and conditions have been updated to reflect this situation.
The Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 (formerly the Distance Selling Regulations) provide consumers with the right to a 'cooling-off' period to allow you to change your mind. Under these regulations, you have the right to cancel your order, without explanation, within 14 days of delivery (starting the day after you receive the goods) and to return the goods for a refund within a further 14 days (28 days in total). The Distance Selling Regulations do not apply to businesses nor to individuals who are trading or acting as a trader (buying goods to re-sell for profit) because no-one is the 'Consumer'. This means there is no 'cooling-off' period and the order cannot be cancelled once processed.
Cancellations - personalised/bespoke and 'On-Demand' items
Where an order is placed for an item which is to be personalised or is bespoke or printed only on-demand, cancellation is not possible once production has started and these are expressly excluded from The Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 (formerly the Distance Selling Regulations).
