This One Inch to the Mile map covers the eastern part of Bedfordshire and SW Cambridgeshire. Coverage stretches from Shefford eastward to Shepreth and northward to Little Barford. Features include the long closed railways west and east of Sandy, the small towns of Shefford, Ashwell, Royston, Biggleswade and Potton, River Ivel Navigation, and small portions of Huntingdonshire and Hertfordshire. On the reverse is a detailed map of part of Sandy, from the Market Square southward to the station and westward to Girtford Bridge; this includes Sandye Place and St Swithin's church. It is not possible to list the many hamlets, farmsteads and other topographical features shown on these maps. However, you might find it useful if we here list the majority of the principal villages and church parishes that are included on this map.
Each includes an introduction and a more detailed map of a small town or village. This Inch to the Mile map, centred on Bedford, is split between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, with a small area of Northants in the NW corner. Coverage stretches from Stoke Goldington and Bradwell eastward to Cardington, and from Harrold southward to Ampthill Park (though Ampthill town is beyond the map). In the SW corner is the area now covered by much of Milton Keynes, but in 1895 Bedford and Newport Pagnell were the only towns on the map. Railways include the Bedford and Northampton line and the Newport Pagnell branch. On the is a detailed map of Milton Keynes village in 1898.
This One Inch to the Mile map portrays an area of east Northamptonshire and north Bedfordshire, centred on Higham Ferrers. Wellingborough is the principal town on the map but interestingly the OS give town status to Higham Ferrers and - further east - Kimbolton, but not to Rushden. Coverage of the map stretches from Cogenhoe eastward to Kimbolton, and from Woodford and Denford southward to Castle Ashby. Railways, apart from the Midland line, include the Northampton & Peterborough Branch and Kettering & Huntingdon Branch. There is plentiful evidence of iron ore extraction.
This Inch to the Mile map, which is split between Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire, covers the north Chilterns. Coverage stretches from Aylesbury eastward to Redbourn and Luton Hoo, and from Whipsnade southward to Chesham. Towns on the map include Berkhampstead (or Berkhamsted), Tring, Hemel Hempstead, Wendover, and features include Ashridge, Wilstone Reservoir, Upper Icknield Way, the LNWR Aylesbury Branch, the Grand Junction Canal. On the reverse is a map of the village of Adbury, with a directory. It is not possible to list the many hamlets, farmsteads and other topographical features shown on these maps. However, you might find it useful if we here list the majority of the principal villages and church parishes that are included on this map. Bedfordshire: Studham, Whipsnade. Buckinghamshire: Aston Clinton, Aylesbury, Bierton, Buckland, Cheddington
