These maps are taken from the famous OS "Inch to the Mile" Maps. Though obviously far less detailed than the large scale maps for which we are perhaps better known, they provide an invaluable overview of a wider area, typically 18 miles across by 12 miles down. For transport historians they are invaluable for showing old railways, while all historians need them for their close depiction of topography, including parish boundaries. This Inch to the Mile map covers parts of Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire. Centred on Mere, coverage extends northward to Longbridge Deverill, westward to Bruton, southward to Gillingham, eastward to Fonthill Bishop. On the reverse we include a map of the village of Zeals. Features include Stourhead, Fonthill, a stretch of the Somerset & Dorset railway, Wardour Castle, etc. It is not possible to list the many hamlets, farmsteads and other topographical features shown on these maps. However, you may find it useful if we list the towns and principal villages or church parishes that are included on this map. Links are given for those for which detailed large-scale maps are also available. Dorset: Bourton, Buckhorn Weston, Gillingham, Motcombe, Silton. Somerset: Batcombe, Blackford, Bratton Seymour

This Inch to the Mile map covers the area around Bournemouth. In 1893 this was split almost equally between Dorset and Hampshire, although today Bournemouth is administratively in Dorset. Coverage stretches from Lytchett Maltravers eastward to Highcliffe and Hinton Park, and from Lydbury Rings and Hinton Parva southward to Poole Harbour and Hengistbury Head. Bournemouth is already shown to be developing into an elegant resort, while the many heaths and commons on the map are attractively portrayed in this early map. On the reverse is an extract from Hampshire Sheet 87.02, covering Hinton Admiral. It is not possible to list the many hamlets, farmsteads and other topographical features shown on these maps.
