These maps are taken from the famous OS "Inch to the Mile" Maps. Though obviously far less detailed than the large scale maps for which we are perhaps better known, they provide an invaluable overview of a wider area, typically 18 miles across by 12 miles down. For transport historians they are invaluable for showing old railways, while all historians need them for their close depiction of topography, including parish boundaries. This Inch to the Mile map covers the area from Devizes southward to Bulford, and eastward to Pewsey. Much of Salisbury Plain is included and on the reverse we include a detailed map of the'lost village' of Imber, commandeered for military use in 1943, with the villagers given 47 days to leave - never to return. It is not possible to list the many hamlets, farmsteads and other topographical features shown on these maps. However, you may find it useful if we list the towns and principal villages or parishes that are included on this map: Wiltshire: All Cannings, Beechingstoke, Bulford, Burbage, Charlton, Chirton, Devizes, Durrington, Earl Stoke, East Coulston, Easterton, Easton Royal, Enford

This detailed map covers the village of Box, probably best known for Brunel's railway tunnel. The railway runs through the map and includes the western portal to the tunnel and both Box station and Box Mill Lane Halt. Other railway features are sidings and the engine shed used until 1919 for a banking engine, said to be the inspiration for the Rev Awdrey's Thomas the Tank Engine (the author lived in Box). Other features include the village with individual houses shown, the church, cemetery, pubs etc; The Bassetts, stone yard, Fogleigh House to the north. To the west the map covers part of Ashley, including Ashley Manor, Ashley Green; Middlehill; and the small village of Ditteridge (or Ditcheridge) including St Christopher's church. The author gives a full history of Box, including information about local quarrying (although a tramway by the A4 road had been removed by 1936). Directories of Box and Ditteridge are included on the reverse. They will provide hours of fascination for historians and genealogists. The maps are neatly folded and each includes a specially written introduction to the area.

This early Inch to the Mile map covers an area of Hampshire centred on Southampton. There is a tiny portion of Wiltshire in the NW corner. The River Test runs through the map, leading to Southampton Water. Part of the New Forest is in the SW quarter. Coverage stretches from Mogshade Hill and Landford eastward to Botley and Swanwick, and from Melchet Park and Romsey southward to Beaulieu Heath and Hamble Spit. There is a fine contrast between Southampton with its expanding docks and populated hinterland and the leafy remoteness of the New Forest, nicely portrayed by the OS on this map. Other features include the vast Netley Hospital, with its railway branch; and close observers of the parish boundaries on these maps will note the extra parochial Melchet Park. On the reverse is a map of the village of Sarisbury. It is not possible to list the many hamlets, farmsteads and other topographical features shown on these maps. However, you might find it useful if we here list the majority of the principal villages and church parishes that are included on this map.
This Inch to the Mile map covers the area west and north of Salisbury, showing the villages along the Ebble, Nadder, Wylye, Avon and Bourne valleys. Coverage stretches from Tisbury eastward to Winterslow, and from Amesbury and Stonehenge southward to Ebbesborne Wake. Many earthworks and other relics of antiquity are marked on the Downs, including Old Sarum, Figsbury Ring, Stonehenge, and Bilbury Rings. On the reverse we include a more detailed map of the village of Wylye, complete with directory. It is not possible to list the many hamlets, farmsteads and other topographical features shown on these maps. However, you may find it useful if we list the towns and principal villages or parishes that are included on this map: Wiltshire: Alderbury, Allington, Alvediston, Amesbury, Barford St Martin, Baverstock

Discover Calne as it was in 1899. The site of the railway station, once used to transport pigs; the workhouse, now an independent girls school; or the Bacon Factory complete with its own school. This map shows the small town of Calne in great detail. This became a borough in 1086 and was a prosperous cloth town in the middle ages, but by the 1890s it was better known for bacon. The town had its own railway branch, shown here with station and Black Dog Siding, and other features include The Strand, workhouse, bacon factory, St Mary's church, etc. To the west of Calne, vast areas of fields dominate the landscape, which the River Marden and the Wilts and Berks Canal cut through on their way to the heart of the town. Along with Kingsbury Green, all the schools, hospitals, allotments and the town centre are marked on to give you a true impression of what the town felt like in 1899. To compliment the map we include a brief history of Calne, covering the Manor Houses and transport history. You can also find a commercial directory and the Calne Branch train timetable printed on the reverse of the map. They will provide hours of fascination for historians and genealogists. The maps are neatly folded and each includes a specially written introduction to the area.

The left hand side of the map shows a large area of farmland, interrupted by Trowle Manor Court Farm, Talbot Farm and Cockhill Farm. The contrasting right hand side of the map displays Trowbridge and the Great Western Railway track that cuts through it. St Thomas's Church, St James's Church, St Stephen's Church, St John's RC Church, the Holy Trinity Chapel and two Methodist Chapels are illustrated on the sheet. Other places of interest are also marked on the map such as the Royal Artillery Barracks, Usher's Brewery, Bellefield House, and its various mills and iron works. The map is double-sided to give maximum coverage and on the reverse is part of adjacent sheet 38.08 continuing coverage eastward and including Ashton Mills and Hilperton Road. A list or private residents from an 1899 directory is also included. The 1886 version is a hand-coloured map. They will provide hours of fascination for historians and genealogists.
