Two landscape features dominate this Inch to the Mile Map: to the north Bala Lake or Llyn Tegid, and to the south, Lake Vyrnwy, a great reservoir created in the valley and completed in 1891. Coverage of the map stretches from Drws-y-Nant station eastward to Pen-y-bont Fawr, and from Bala and Llandderfel station southward to Llanwddyn. As Derrick Pratt says, "most of the map is taken up with the backbone of the Berwyn Mountains, desolate, thinly populated moorlands" but the map also shows a long stretch of the Bala & Dolgelley line, and the final few miles of the Tanat Valley Railway. On the back is an extract from Montgomery Sheet 4.12, showing Llangynog in detail, including the inclines up to the Craig Rhiwarth Slate Quarries. It is not possible to list the many hamlets, farmsteads and other topographical features shown on these maps. However, you might find it useful if we here list the majority of the principal villages and church parishes that are included on this map. Merioneth: Bala, Llanfor, Llangower, Llanuwchllyn, Llanycil. Montgomeryshire: Hirnant, Llangynog, Llanwddyn.

Coverage stretches from Cemmaes Road station eastward to Llanwyddelan, and from Dinas Mawddwy and Craig Dunant southward to Talerddig and Newydd Fynyddog. Features include stretches of the Cambrian Railway and the Mawddwy Railway, but the map is dominated by hilly terrain and ranges of the Cambrian Mountains. On the reverse is a detailed map of the centre of Dinas Mawddwy. It is not possible to list the many hamlets, farmsteads and other topographical features shown on these maps. However, you might find it useful if we here list the majority of the principal villages and church parishes that are included on this map. Merioneth: Dinas Mawddwy, Mallwyd. Montgomeryshire: Cemmaes, Darowen, Dolanog, Garthbeibio, Llanbrynmair, Llanerfyl, Llanfihangel-yng-Ngwynfa, Llangadfan, Llanllugan.

This Inch to the Mile map covers the southern part of Merioneth, with coverage stretching from the coast eastward to Machynlleth and Llanwrin, and from Barmouth and Dolgellau southward to Tywyn. Cader Idris is a dominant feature on the map, and other natural features include part of the Dovey Valley, Tal-y-llyn Lake, and the Afon Mawddach. Railways creep up several of the valleys, including the Tal-y-Llyn Railway and the Corris Railway. On the reverse is a large extract from Merioneth Sheet 42.08 showing Upper Corris in detail, including Abercorris Slate Quarry, Abercwmeiddaw Slate Quarry, and some of the narrow gauge mineral lines that served the area; the extract stretches eastward to Garnedd-wen and a station on the Corris Railway. It is not possible to list the many hamlets, farmsteads and other topographical features shown on these maps. However, you might find it useful if we here list the majority of the principal villages and church parishes that are included on this map.
This One Inch to the Mile map covers much of southern Montgomeryshire, with coverage stretching from Y Foel, Pen Plynlimon-Arwystli and Plynlimon Fawr eastward to Penstrowed; and from Carno southward to Llangurig. Much of the area is mountainous, especially to the west, but roads and railways go up the valleys of the Severn and the Carno. Llanidloes, near the centre of the map, is the only town, although Caersws, once home to a Roman camp, has a workhouse. The Cambrian Railway is shown and also a long stretch of their Mid Wales line, the Van Railway, and the route of the already disused line to Llangurig. Railway historians will also enjoy our backing map, an extract from Montgomery Sheet 41.12, which shows Y Fan in detail, including the Van Mines, mineral tramlines, and the end of the Van Railway, including Garth & Van Road station. It is not possible to list the many hamlets, farmsteads and other topographical features shown on these maps. However, you might find it useful if we here list the majority of the principal villages and church parishes that are included on this map. Montgomeryshire: Aberhafesp
