An essential map for anyone interested in the history of County Durham. This covers the area from Durham itself (just east of the cathedral) eastward to the coast and Hartlepool, and from Hetton-le-Hole southward to Sedgefield. Several long closed or mothballed railways are shown: the Hartlepool-Ferryhill branch, the Stockton & Castle Eden branch, the Durham & Sunderland branch, the Sunderland & Hartlepool branch. There are also numerous colliery villages with their mineral lines. On the reverse is a detailed map of Trimdon village. It is not possible to list the many hamlets, farmsteads and other topographical features shown on these maps. However, you may find it useful if we list the towns and principal villages or church parishes that are included on this map.Durham: Bishop Middleham, Brierton, Butterwick & Oldacres, Castle Eden, Chilton, Cold Hesledon, Cornforth, Coxhoe, Dalton Piercy, Durham, Easington Lane, Easington with Thorpe, Elwick, Embleton

This One Inch Ordnance Survey map covers the western area of County Durham, stretching from Stanhope eastward to Durham City itself (which is split by the right hand margin), and from Lanchester southward to Bishop Auckland. It is an area of rich contrasts, with the Wear Valley meandering through the map; the western part of the map is partly moorland, while everywhere there are industrial railways, collieries and steel works, long since gone. The reverse includes a detailed map of Brancepeth Colliery. It is not possible to list the many hamlets, farmsteads and other topographical features shown on these maps. However, you may find it useful if we list the towns and principal villages or church parishes that are included on this map.Co Durham: Bearpark, Billy Row, Bishop Auckland, Brancepeth, Brandon, Broom, Byers Green, Cornsay, Coundon, Crook, Escomb, Esh Winning

There are parts of 5 counties on this map: Cumberland and Durham are the principal constituents, but there are also sections of Northumberland and Westmorland and, at the foot, a tiny fragment of Yorkshire. The author Robert Forsythe describes it as at the core of the Pennines, and with upper Weardale running through it, thisis a dramatic landscape. Coverage stretches from Alston eastward to Eastgate, and southward to Widdybank Fell. On the reverse is a map of Bolt's Burn, topday better known as Rookhope, and a feature of both maps is the group of remarkable railways that ran here. It is not possible to list the many hamlets, farmsteads and other topographical features shown on these maps. However, you may find it useful if we list the towns and principal villages or church parishes that are included on this map.Cumberland: Alston, Garrigill, Nenthead. Co Durham: Bolt's Burn, Eastgate, Ireshopeburn, Langdon Common, Rookhope, St John's Chapel. Northumberland: Allenheads.
