Stanfords Stanford's Map of the Environs of Paris (1870)

The Stanford's Map of the environs of Paris is from a fascinating series of reproductions from our Edward Stanford Cartographic Collection archive. The text reads 'Stanford's map of the environs of Paris shewing the fortifications.' It is dated September 1st 1870 (nineteen years before the Eiffel Tower was erected). The map covers the centre of Paris (indicated in pink) and extends well outside the present day Boulevard Périphérique, the course of which is indicated on the map by the old city walls. Coverage of the north includes St Danis up to Montmorency. The East includes the Château de Vincennes, most of Champigny-sur-Marne to the north-eastern Bondy. Coverage of the south shows Villejuif down to Forêt Domaniale de Verrières. In the west the map takes us beyond the northward bend in the Seine to include all of the Bois de Boulogne, the Parc de St. Cloud all the way up to St-Germain-en-Laye. This reproduction has been taken from the original cartographic scale of [1:60,000] on an 18.5"x23" map. Various districts of the city, as well as surrounding villages are named. No street names are shown. The map has no legend but topographic artistry shows elevated areas and other details. This lovely map will appeal to anyone interested in this great city.

The map is encapsulated in heavy-duty 1.6 mil laminate which makes the paper much more durable and resistant to the swelling and shrinking caused by changes in humidity. Laminated maps can be framed without the need for glass, so the fames can be much lighter and less expensive.

As part of the commemorations of the century of WW, IGN have produced a map detailing the Battle of Chemin des Dames (Second Battle of Aisne) which took place from 15April – 2 November 1917. Based on a 1:75000 topographic base, complete with contours and relief shading, IGN have added details of front lines, important battles, tourist routes, Military remnants, cemetaries. A zoom in of the main battle zone at 1:35000 is also included. The legend and editorial texts in three languages: French, German and English.

To mark the centenary of the First World War and produced by IGN in partnership with the Centenary Mission, the regional and departmental tourism committees of the regions and departments covering the front zone, this map covers the entire front from Switzerland to the North Sea on a scale of 1: 410,000 (1 cm = 4.1 km). The front lines, battle sites, memorials, military cemeteries, old defensive works, museums are all clearly indicated. The legend is in French, English and German.

Versailles was originally a hunting lodge and this Map was completed in 1768 and then reduced from the original 12 sheets to a single 1:28,800 between 1775 and 1782 by the geographers of the Camps et Armées Cottereau, Dauchet, Delplanque, Ducaille, Gaultier and Hervet. The map shows the layout of the formal gardens as well as the hunting land.

A map of the Battle of the Somme 1916. Originally published as part of the Centenary commemorations, this map is part of a series of WW1 maps produced by IGN in French, English and German. The map shows the moving of the front line during 2016 and the location of the various armies and the directions of movement.  The central section is also shown at a scale of 1:35,000 to give a better overview of the main area of the battle field.

The maps are packed with detail, much of it obtained by the local Resistance, and show the terrain, obstacles and defences that the Allied Forces were expected to meet. They will be of great interest to historians and to all who are interested in tracing those historic days. This small series of reprints are taken from the 1:25, 000 maps and printed in colour, eg showing defences as Blue = confirmed, and Purple = not confirmed. Covers the area around Benouville and Ranville, and is centred on what is now know as Pegasus Bridge. It was the scene of the heroic glider landings that have been called "the greatest feat of flying of WWII". The map is double-sided and covers the area from Ouistreham in the north, southward to Herouvillette, and westward to Cazelle. Includes background notes on the Allied invasion, its mapping requirements, the significance of the area in this map and on the remarkable action resulting in the capture of the bridge.
