<p>This One Inch to the Mile map covers the area from Kirkby Stephen southward to Garsdale and eastward to Askrigg. Upper Swaledale is included,  with the tiny settlements of Muker,  Tan Hill and Keld. On the reverse is a detailed map of the little town of Askrigg,  including West End,  St Oswald&#039;s church,  Millgill Force (but not the station). A directory of Askrigg is also included.  It is not possible to list the many hamlets,  farmsteads and other topographical features shown on these maps. However,  you may find it useful if we list the towns and principal villages or church parishes that are included on this map.Westmorland: Crosby Garrett,  Hartley,  Kirkby Stephen,  Nateby,  Ravenstonedale,  Waitby. <p>This detailed map provides good coverage of the small market town of Kirkby Stephen,  which in the 19th century developed into a modest railway centre. Our map is double-sided to provide maximum coverage. The main map includes the town centre,  with coverage stretching southward to Stenkrith Bridge,  and eastward to Hellgill Howe,  Birkett Lane and Low Out Wood. Features include the town centre,  St Stephen&#039;s church,  workhouse,  Redman House,  Edenbank Brewery,  Frank&#039;s Bridge,  Hartley Hill,  Hartley,  Merrygill Viaduct,  Podgill Viaduct,  Podgill Hole,  Brockram Quarry. On the reverse is a good part of adjacent sheet 23.14,  extending coverage westward,  and this includes the NER station,  engine shed and railway sidings,  Croglam Castle,  Auction Mart. (Note that the Midland station is off the map.)</p></description>

<p>This One Inch to the Mile map covers a central area of Westmorland,  coverage stretching from the east shore of Lake Windermere eastward to Langdale Fell,  and from Kendal northward to Shap Wells. On the reverse is a detailed map of Bowness,  including features such as the Hydropathic Hotel,  Old England Hotel,  Bowness Bay,  numerous boathouses and stretching across to Belle Isle and Thompson&#039;s Holme. A small portion of Yorkshire is in the SE corner of the one inch map. Elizabeth Clutton refers to the &quot;quieter,  gentler fells and valleys of central Westmorland&quot;,  a contrast with the more dramatic Lake District,  and to the &quot;golden age&quot; that Westmorland farming was enjoying at the time of this map.
