Ruysch 1508 Map - Published 1893
One of the first maps of the new world, Johannes Ruysch made this map, using a polar projection, which includes an extensive view of South America, islands of the West Indies, and a portion of North America. The World Map from Ruysch appeared for the first time among the Tabulae Novae in some copies of the 1507 Rome edition of Ptolemy's Geography. Ruysch's map illustrates a number of significant geographic features more correctly than before, especially along the easterly sea route to the Orient which was of prime importance to early sixteenth-century Europeans. An incredible historical piece.

Stanford's Africa Map (1879)
Reproduction of a very interesting map of Africa published by our founder Edward Stanford in 1879 and showing the continent in the relatively early stages of its colonization. The information marked on the map forms a fascinating mixture of names of towns, countries or colonial possessions, geographical regions or features such as deserts, and of many African tribes. Although the map has no physical colouring, it instantly conveys much information about the continent's geography through the distribution of the already explored regions with established administrative entities. The bulk of the coastline is already in colour and various political units are shown in the more accessible Sahel belt, from the Atlantic along the Niger and around Lake Chad to Darfur and northern Ethiopia. However, the Sahara and the great expanse of the continent around the Congo (called here Livingstone River) and further south and east are yet to be colonized. Although, in many places, particularly in East Africa, various geographical features are already marked on the map. Latitude and longitude lines are drawn at 10° intervals. Of all the continents, Africa has undergone most changes from the mid 19th century to the present day and this map provides an early step towards understanding its history.
Stanford's Chart of the Solent, Spithead and Southampton Wat
The Stanford's Chart of The Solent, Spithead and Southampton Water is from a fascinating series of reproductions from our Edward Stanford Cartographic Collection archive. Published in 1932, prepared under the supervision of Captain O.M.Watts, A.I.N.A. This map shows the entire Isle of Wight and the surrounding coast line from Selsey to Milford on Sea with inset charts of Beaulieu River, Bembridge, Cowes, Hamble River, River Itchen, Keyhaven, Lymington River, Newtown River, Wootton Creek and Yarmouth. This chart contains lots of tidal information and explanations. Soundings are given at low water ordinary spring tides in fathoms upon the general chart, and in feet upon the inserts. Based upon British Admiralty Charts with the permission of the controller of H.M. Stationary Office and of the Hydrographer of the Navy. This beautifully detailed map will be appeal to anyone with nautical interests.
Stanford's Folio Asia Map, by J. Arrowsmith (1884)
The Stanford's Asia Map is from a fascinating series of reproductions from our Edward Stanford Cartographic Collection archive. This map was made by the famous cartographer John Arrowsmith and published by Stanfords in 1884. Country boundaries are outlined in bright colours while the pale background with subtle hachure to show the mountain ranges makes the numerous place names easy to read. Many smaller tributaries of the continent's great rivers are named, from the Ob, the Yenisei and the Lena in the north to the Ganges or the Irrawaddy in the south and the Yangtze in the east. Coverage extends to the Equator, so the southern part of Indonesia is not included. While the north of the continent looks as it was 100 years later except for the changes in the European part of Russia, Central Asia and the Middle East are much different from now, Mongolia is still part of China, etc. Names of Chinese ports open to foreign commerce after the Second Opium War are underlined; "Hong-kong I. & Victoria" are duly annotated with Cy for colony. Latitude and longitude lines are drawn at 5° intervals.
Stanford's Folio British Isles Map (1884)
The Stanford's British Isles Map is from a fascinating series of reproductions from our Edward Stanford Cartographic Collection archive. Published in 1884, this map shows the British Isles with their old historic counties. Bright colours highlight the boundaries of the old counties as they were. The pale background makes all the place names easy to read. In common with other maps published by Stanfords at that time, an unusually large number of small rivers are named, even the lovely Cuckmere is there. Ironically perhaps, the map provides an interesting contrast between the significant administrative changes within Great Britain and the retention of the county borders within Ireland. This map includes lots more interesting historical finds, for example; London looks significantly smaller than it does on maps today mostly falling within the county of Middlesex. This is a great map that beautifully tells this history of counties.

This map was made by the famous cartographer John Arrowsmith and published by Stanfords in 1884. The map presents the continent at the height of its great empires: imperial Russia with Finland and much of Poland, united Germany including Alsace and part of Lorraine, the Austro-Hungarian Empire (although already post the Compromise, still shown here as one country) with north-western Balkans, and the Ottomans still with Albania and much of the present-day Greece. Country boundaries are outlined in bright colours while the pale background with subtle hachuring indicating the mountain ranges are in most places printed very faintly so names of towns and numerous geographical region marked on the map are easy to read. The map also has an unusually large number of names of smaller rivers. Latitude and longitude lines are drawn at 5° intervals.

Stanford's Folio North America Map (1884)
The Stanford's Map of North America is from a fascinating series of reproductions from our Edward Stanford Cartographic Collection archive. Originally published in 1884, this map features bright colours highlighting international borders, with corresponding colouring indicating state/provincial borders within USA, Canada and Mexico. Plain background with hachure for mountain ranges makes the place names marked on the map easy to read. Several mountain peaks, mainly in USA, are shown with heights (in feet). In common with other map published by Stanfords around that time, numerous smaller rivers are named. Latitude and longitude lines are drawn at 5° intervals. Whilst at the first glance there have been few significant changes in the international boundaries. Panama is still shown as part of Colombia plus Greenland and Iceland are in Danish colours, internal administrative border provide much interesting detail. In the US all the states which acceded to the Union after the map's publication date are already there, but with the Dakotas as one state and Oklahoma shown as the Indian Territory and its panhandle as separate Public Lands. In Canada, the northern borders of most of the provinces are much further south than today, southern Saskatchewan called Assiniboia and northern Alberta as Athabasca, etc. Coverage of Canada extends north to the Parry Islands (now Queen Elizabeth Islands), with only the south-eastern coast of the Ellesmere Island. In the Caribbean individual islands are in the colours of their colonial powers (their names are not marked on the map). Another interesting feature are the markings for the submarine telegraph cables.

Stanford's General Map of the World (1920)
The Stanford's General Map of the World Map is from a fascinating series of reproductions from our Edward Stanford Cartographic Collection archive. This map from 1920 reflects the changes in political boundaries and the new world order in the aftermath of World War I. The colouring and annotations to place names not only indicate dominions and colonial possessions, with the British Empire in its customary red, but also show territories administered under the Mandate of the League of Nations. On land masses topographic information is provided by names of mountain ranges and of an unusually large number of rivers. Main railway routes are also marked. On seas and oceans, principal shipping routes are shown annotated with distances. The map has latitude and longitude lines at 15 degree intervals and for each longitude line indicates the time difference with the Greenwich Meridian. The map is drawn on a Mercator's projection.

Stanford's Library Map is one of the great maps of London. It shows the city at a key time of the development of the metropolis and the impact of the railway. Our founder, Edward Stanford took the Ordnance Survey 12 inch to a mile sheets of their Skeleton Survey (showing outline and elevation only) for the Metropolitan Commissioners of Sewers, and despatched his own surveyors to complete immense quantity of detail for which this map is notable. Originally at a scale of 1:10560 a 14x16"map in a series of 24 which included surrounding areas. This map is in black and white and is extremely detailed, naming streets and marking major buildings. The map coverage is of central London and extends out to Marylebone and Knightsbridge to the west showing some of Hyde Park. The northern point includes Bloomsbury and the British Museum. It extends down to Victoria Station and Lambeth Bridge and shows a small portion of Lambeth and Waterloo south of the river. This lovely map will appeal to anyone interested in this great city.

Stanford's Library Map of South America (1864)
The Stanford's Map of South America is from a fascinating series of reproductions from our Edward Stanford Cartographic Collection archive. This reproduction of a map published in 1879 by the founder of our company, Edward Stanford. It was constructed in 1864 by Alexander Keith Johnston who was a geographer in Edinburgh for the Queen. The continent is shown already in its port-colonial stage but with many international borders not yet fixed and different from today's. An interesting feature of the map is the presentation of several disputed regions, between Bolivia and Paraguay, Peru and Ecuador, or Brazil and the "Granadian Confederation" (present day Colombia). When this map was made, Guyana was British Guiana and Suriname was Dutch Guiana. Central America is also shown in slightly less detail up to the Southern part of Guatemala and some of the Caribbean islands are included up to the southern tip of Dominica. Topography is indicated by hachures and many tributaries of the Amazon, the Orinoco and the Parana are named. Latitude and longitude lines are drawn at 5° intervals. This reproduction has been taken from an original cartographic scale of 1:5,275,000 on a 31x28" map that was made out of four sheets.

Stanford's Map of Italy (1859)
The Stanford's Map of Italy is from a fascinating series of reproductions from our Edward Stanford Cartographic Collection archive. This is a reproduction of a map originally published on 2nd May 1859 by Edward Stanford, the founder of our company. The map catches the country in an interesting stage of its history, just before the unification, and still shows the individual states: the Kingdom of Piedmont - Sardinia, the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, the Papal States, etc, all in different colours. Hachures are used to show the spine of the Apennines and other mountainous regions. Interesting insets show enlargements of the environs of Venice, Genoa and Naples with Vesuvius, and another panel presents the whole of the Austro-Hungarian Empire which then still included Lombardy and north-eastern Italy. This reproduction was taken from what used to be called a "cloth-dissected" map, made when the map itself was cut into sections and each section then individually pasted onto an overall cloth backing for the whole map. In this version the whole map is backed onto cloth in one piece but the gaps between the sections have been reproduced in the printing to preserve the style and the feeling of the original. This lovely map will appeal to anyone interested in this great country.

Stanford's Map of the County of London (1888)
This map is from a fascinating series of reproductions from our Edward Stanford Cartographic Collection archive. The Stanford's Map of the County of London, According to the Local Government Act 1888, to give it its full title, presenting the administrative division of the capital and indicating the boundaries of both the Electoral Divisions returning two members to the County Council and of the Urban Sanitary Districts with control of main roads under the Highways and Locomotives (Amendment) Act of 1878. The colouring and the boundaries are overlaid on a street plan with names of main and selected smaller streets, graphics indicating parks and other common land, railway lines, etc. Hachures show the topography with the hills of north and south London clearly marked. This is London which, administratively, extends north of the Thames between Hammersmith, Hampstead, Stamford Hill and Poplar, and south of the river between Putney, Streatham, Lower Sydenham and Eltham (although the map itself extends a bit further out, particularly in the north-east). An interesting feature is the inclusion within the County of London of a small area outside its overall boundary - the site of the present day Leg of Mutton Nature Reserve in Barnes.
Stanford's Map of the Environs of Paris (1870)
The Stanford's Map of the environs of Paris is from a fascinating series of reproductions from our Edward Stanford Cartographic Collection archive. The text reads 'Stanford's map of the environs of Paris shewing the fortifications.' It is dated September 1st 1870 (nineteen years before the Eiffel Tower was erected). The map covers the centre of Paris (indicated in pink) and extends well outside the present day Boulevard Périphérique, the course of which is indicated on the map by the old city walls. Coverage of the north includes St Danis up to Montmorency. The East includes the Château de Vincennes, most of Champigny-sur-Marne to the north-eastern Bondy. Coverage of the south shows Villejuif down to Forêt Domaniale de Verrières. In the west the map takes us beyond the northward bend in the Seine to include all of the Bois de Boulogne, the Parc de St. Cloud all the way up to St-Germain-en-Laye. This reproduction has been taken from the original cartographic scale of [1:60,000] on an 18.5"x23" map. Various districts of the city, as well as surrounding villages are named. No street names are shown. The map has no legend but topographic artistry shows elevated areas and other details. This lovely map will appeal to anyone interested in this great city.
Stanford's Map of the Siberian Railway (1904)
The Stanford's Map of the Siberian Railway is from a fascinating series of reproductions from our Edward Stanford Cartographic Collection archive. Depicting the great land route to China and Korea, this map was published by Edward Stanford, Long Acre on the 1st February 1904. This vital rail route was also known as the Moscow Highway or the Tea Route because of the large quantities of tea exported from China. It connected European Russia to Siberia and China. Construction started in 1730 and was not completed until the mid 19th-century. Until the Tran-Siberian Railway was built in 1916, the Siberian Railway route was the longest and most famous. This is a beautifully detailed map that will appeal to anyone with an interest in railway history.

The Stanford's New Map of Kabul is from a fascinating series of reproductions from our Edward Stanford Cartographic Collection archive. This map was published by Stanfords in January 1880 and says 'Stanford's New Map of Kabul and the country round as far as Kohistan, Tagao, and Lughman: Gandamak, Kurram, and Shutargardan; The Upper Logar; Maidan and Argandi; with the sites of all the recent conflicts.' The whole map is tonal except for a few red and blue lines. One of which indicates the route of Lieutenant Vincent Eyre and the other captives. Another shows General Roberts' advance. This is a beautiful historic map with lots of regions fascinatingly still marked as 'unexplored'.

Stanford's Pacific-centred World Map (1884)
The Stanford's Pacific-centred World Map is from a fascinating series of reproductions from our Edward Stanford Cartographic Collection archive. Originally published in 1884, this political wall map is drawn on a Mercator's projection presenting the world with the Pacific Ocean at its centre. Political boundaries are coloured in bold, gradually shading lighter as is typical in maps from this time. Latitude and longitude lines are at 10° intervals. Europe and Africa look very different from today, Asia with many changes mainly in the Middle East, but the Americas mostly unchanged. A particularly interesting feature of the map is the difference in the presentation of the two Polar Regions: the Arctic Ocean with most of its coastline already there, whilst the Antarctic is still in the early stages of exploration and only segments of its coast already mapped. Separate panels show lands contiguous to the North and South Poles, drawn to the equatorial scale of the map.

Ltd., London in 1901, this map displays beautiful aqua tones through the contours that show depth in fathoms from sea level. An interesting feature of this chart is that it shows routes of previous polar explorations. The tracks of the following three expeditions are given: The Challenger 1873-76 The German Expedition 'Valdivia' 1898-99 The Belgian Expedition 'Belgia' 1898-99 Other lines engraved on the chart are: The appropriate limit of the Pack Ice during the Austral Summer Months. Line of freezing point in the air. Northern limit of icebergs.
Stanford's Tourist's Map of Europe (1928)
The Stanford's Tourist Map of Europe is from a fascinating series of reproductions from our Edward Stanford Cartographic Collection archive. Published by Stanford's Geographical Establishment in May 1928, this map shows country borders in contrasting colours and the network on main and subsidiary railway lines. Coverage includes the southern coastline of the Mediterranean, extends to the eastern coast of the Black Sea, but in the north only the southern part of Scandinavia is included. The map shows Europe with its post-Versailles borders; British Isles have the same red border for both GB and the whole of Ireland, but acknowledging the existence of the "Irish Free State". International borders along the southern and the eastern Mediterranean indicate colonial or mandated possessions. Within all the countries map shows main and subsidiary railway lines, displaying the great contrast between the extensive networks within Germany, most of England or northern France and the less densely covered eastern and south-eastern parts of Europe. Within Russia the railway linking St. Petersburg to Moscow with the kink (straightened in 2001) in the line known as the "Tsar's finger" catches one's eye. Latitude and longitude lines are drawn at 2° intervals.
