This is the second edition of the second book of a two-volume guide to Provence, written by the authors of the prize-winning Landscapes of Madeira. It is intended for motorists who want to tour the most beautiful roads in western Provence and Languedoc/Roussillon and enjoy some superb walks along the way. Beginning at Aix-en-Provence, you travel west via the Lubéron and Mont Ventoux to the great Roman cities and the Pont du Gard. After forays north to the Ardèche, the Tarn and the Cirque de Navacelles, head south through Hérault to Carcassonne and the Canal du Midi. Crossing the Corbières and the Land of the Cathars, you reach the foot of Canigou, holy mountain of the Pyrenees. The book is also ideal for those taking city breaks to southern France with the budget airlines. From bases like Carcassonne, Perpignan, Nîmes, Marseille, Montpellier many walks and tours lie within easy reach. The touring routes have been described in such detail that there is no need to make constant reference to a map. The walks selected all set in areas of great natural beauty and historical interest are those the authors believe offer the greatest sense of satisfaction for the effort involved. These are not tough GR routes, but mostly circular walks suitable for moderately fit people. Best months for walking: generally March to June and September and October, but most of the walks described can be enjoyed throughout the winter months. Where to Stay. The book covers a lot of ground; touring bases are suggested at the start of each tour. If you're travelling out of season, there is no need to book ahead. If you're just taking a short budget city-break, many walks will be within easy reach, but you will have to hire a car, as public transport in western Provence and Languedoc-Roussillon is limited. 12 car tours, 50 long and short walks, 33 picnic suggestions 136 pages + touring map
