This is the first book of a two-volume guide to Provence, written by the authors of the prize-winning Landscapes of Madeira. It is intended for motorists who want to tour the most beautiful roads in Côte d'Azur and eastern Provence and enjoy some superb walks along the way. Beginning at Nice and the Riviera, you head north and west through the Alpes-Maritimes and Alpes de Haute-Provence (highlights include the Mercantour National Park, Grand Canyon du Verdon and a journey on the Train des Pignes). Beyond Var, with its unspoilt coast, the book takes you round the Montagne Ste-Victoire to Aix-en-Provence.
The book is also ideal for those taking city breaks to Nice with the budget airlines ; there's no need to hire a car, because many walks are within easy reach by the excellent public transport.
The touring routes have been described in such detail that there is no need to make constant reference to a map. The walks selected all set in areas of great natural beauty and historical interest are those the authors believe offer the greatest sense of satisfaction for the effort involved. These are not tough GR routes, but mostly circular walks suitable for moderately fit people.
See also: Walk & Eat: Nice - walks easily reached from Nice, with en-route restaurant descriptions, menus and recipes to try at home.
Best months for walking: generally March to June and September and October, but walks on the Côte d'Azur can be enjoyed throughout the winter months.
Where to Stay. The book covers a lot of ground; touring bases are suggested at the start of each tour. If you're travelling out of season, there is no need to book ahead. If you're just taking a short break, then the greatest selection of walks will be reached from Nice, and there is no need to hire a car.
'The book is packed with maps and photographs (as well as a large fold-out touring map) and the authors have captured the very essence of the countryside in a manner that is both personal and highly informative. I was impressed with the touring itineraries and the fact that the book actually guides and informs, without the usual antiseptic and oh so bland descriptions found in many books. I was saddened only because the book pointed up my ignorance of areas which I thought I had explored properly, and I found myself wanting to return, there and then, with this excellent little guide, to put matters right.' - Craig Bradshaw, Motoring and Leisure
