Tuscany - this most favourite of Italy's inland regions has been one of our most-requested destinations. We think enthusiasts of our guides will be delighted with the resulting book. It covers walks and tours ranging from the Carrera marble quarries in the northwest down to southern Tuscany, with a particular emphasis on the countryside round Florence and in the Chianti, making it especially suitable for those who wish to combine a visit to Florence with seeing something of the Italian countryside. (If you plan to do this, you'll need one of the many good city guides that are available for your exploration of Florence, whilst this new 'Landscape' will show you the best of the rural scene.)
In addition to the walking and touring notes, this book contains a wealth of information about Tuscany's customs and cuisine, flora, fauna and history all of them illustrated. The author has been resident in Tuscany for many years.
Best months for walking: September to June
Where to Stay: if you are going to rely on public transport to reach the walks, you will need to stay in a city (Florence or Siena). If you will have a car, you will have much more scope and you can, for example, opt to rent a villa in the countryside or a room or apartment on a farm, which will often be located in delightful scenery.
