Ceredigion holds a unique position in the history and culture of Wales. It has also undergone something of an identity crisis, having been a recognised unit since the fifth century, in 1536 it transformed into Cardiganshire. Later the county became Dyfed, but between 1974 and 1996, symptomatic of the Welshness of the region, the historical name Ceredigion was revived by the district council and the name Ceredigion County Council by the new unitary authority in 1996. The region of Ceredigion is named after Ceredig, the son of the fifth-century Celtic leader Cunndda, who was the leader of the northern British tribe that recaptured this area from the Irish invaders.
